For those of you thinking it strange that I should have joined PC to work on computers, I finally did some physical labour as a volunteer. It was Thursday when I got the call - "We're looking for some volunteers to help paint at the YMCA on Saturday.". This is the type of thing I usually like to worm out of, but since the volunteer asking me is always busy doing so many things I decided to do it.
After the warden's meeting (which incidentally was the first time I have presented a Powerpoint presentation to a group) a couple of us headed down to the YMCA. We arrived around 11:45am while some had been there from 9 that morning. I grabbed a brush and got going. Soon I remembered why it's been more than 5 years since I've painted anything larger than a touch-up. See, I've inherited this little perfectionist gene from my mother and that combined with my rather monkish tendencies tends to leave me unsatisfied with anything I can't finish precisely the way I wish. My main complaints were the paint was not going on evenly and since I'm not well trained with painting, I figure I just was not applying it correctly.
I continued painting, complaining but a little and enjoying the sun that would help me get back the colour that my visit to Washington stole from me. I got to talk a little with some of the Group 76 volunteers who I didn't know so well. And I also get to say I did some work that is close to the stereotypic PC experience. Physical labour.
